Food to avoid during pregnancy complete list for safety

Pregnancy is a sensitive time. While some foods are very healthy, some foods can be harmful for the mother and the baby. Many women in Pakistan do not know which foods can cause problems during pregnancy.

In this article, we will tell you in detail which foods you should avoid during pregnancy.

1. Raw Papaya and Pineapple

Raw or semi-ripe papaya contains latex, which can cause uterus contractions and may lead to miscarriage, especially in the first trimester. Pineapple in large amounts also contains bromelain which is not safe. Avoid both in the first 3 months.

2. Unpasteurized Milk and Juices

Never drink raw milk directly from a farm without boiling it. It contains harmful bacteria like Listeria which can cause infection to the baby. Always boil milk properly. Avoid unpasteurized street juices as well.

3. High Mercury Fish

Fish is healthy, but some big sea fish like King Mackerel, Shark, and Swordfish contain high mercury. High mercury can damage the baby's brain development. In Pakistan, avoid eating too much of large sea fish. Small fish like Rahu and small river fish are safe in small amounts.

4. Too Much Caffeine - Tea and Coffee

In Pakistan, we drink a lot of chai. During pregnancy, more than 2 cups of strong tea or coffee per day is not safe. Too much caffeine can cause low birth weight and even miscarriage. Limit your chai to 1-2 light cups per day. Avoid energy drinks and cola completely.

5. Street Food and Unhygienic Food

Avoid gol gappay, samosa, pakoras from stalls, and other street foods that are made in unhygienic conditions. They can cause typhoid and food poisoning, which is very dangerous in pregnancy. Always eat home-cooked fresh food.

6. Raw or Undercooked Eggs and Meat

Do not eat half-fried eggs or undercooked chicken/mutton. They may contain Salmonella bacteria. Always eat fully cooked eggs and well-cooked meat. Avoid fast food like shawarma which is often undercooked.

7. Alcohol, Smoking, and Cold Drinks

Smoking and alcohol are strictly forbidden. They can cause serious birth defects. Also avoid all kinds of cold drinks like Coca-Cola, Sting, and Pepsi as they contain high sugar and caffeine.

Conclusion

Prevention is better than cure. If you avoid these 7 harmful foods, you will have a safe and healthy pregnancy. Focus on home-cooked daal, roti, sabzi, milk, and fresh fruits.

Always consult your doctor if you have any doubts about food.
